WHAT ARE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCILS?

In Los Angeles, they are your your most local form of government.

The system was created to connect LA’s diverse communities to City Hall, and was established in 1999 by an amendment to the City Charter. While Neighborhood Council board members are unpaid, they are public officials elected to office.

Every Neighborhood Council is held to the local, state, and federal standards that other City officials and agencies must observe.

Neighborhood Councils are community’s official advocates on issues like homelessness, housing, land use, public safety, transportation, and sustainability.

Like City Council and State Legislatures, Neighborhood Councils members take action as a board, and not as individuals, so they do not take an official position without a majority vote first.
