Under 18 Voter Info

How old do I need to be to vote in this Official City election?

14. If you are 14 or 15 years old by April 30th you can vote for 1 of the 36 seats up for election - the youth seat. If you are 16 or older, you can vote in all 36 races.

Will my ballot come automatically in the mail for this election?

Nope. Because the eligibility criteria for this election are so unique, voters need to request ballots. The process of requesting a ballot is also a voter’s way of self-declaring their eligibility. That is why it is important to request your ballot HERE.

Will registering for this election mean I am per-registered for future elections in which I am old enough to vote?

Nope. But if you’re 18 you can check your registration status HERE. And if you’re 16 or 17 you can actually pre-register to vote in other elections HERE.

Does my vote in this election even matter? There is only one candidate for Youth Seat.

YES! Yes times one million! Elections are about more than getting candidates into office. Voting is an opportunity to express your views and opinions, even if there is only one candidate on the ballot. By casting a vote, you are indicating your level of support or opposition to the candidate and their platform. Not to mention, if a candidate, even one who runs unopposed, gets a lot of support from voters it becomes easier for that candidate, once elected, to fight through gridlock to get things done. By participating in the electoral process, even in elections with only one candidate, you are sending a message about the importance of accountability and transparency in government. In short, your vote will help to shape the political landscape.
